Every recommendation should explain what a knife does well, what it gives up, who it suits, and what evidence supports the conclusion. We separate direct product use from desk research so readers can judge the strength of the evidence.
Evidence labels
Hands-on tested
We use this label only when the product was directly handled and used. The article must describe the tasks performed and include observations, measurements, or original media that a product listing cannot provide.
Research-based
These guides compare documented specifications, manufacturer instructions, established retailer information, credible third-party sources, and recurring owner feedback. They do not claim direct product use. Conflicting claims and limits in the available evidence are stated plainly.
How products are selected
We begin with the job: the food or material being cut, the user’s technique, maintenance tolerance, safety needs, and budget. We then compare blade geometry, steel, handle design, construction, edge care, warranty, availability, and meaningful drawbacks. Popularity alone is not a recommendation.
The 100-point review rubric
A numerical score is optional and appears only after a substantive editorial review. The visible page must show the same breakdown used by the editor.

Editorial approval checklist
- The evidence label matches the work actually completed.
- Specifications and material claims are sourced and current.
- The article states at least two specific advantages or drawbacks and its review limitations.
- The recommendation identifies suitable users and meaningful alternatives.
- Affiliate links and relationships are disclosed.
- Any visible score has a complete 100-point breakdown and editorial-team approval.
- The publication date is preserved; a reviewed date is added only after this checklist is complete.
Updates and corrections
Typographical or layout changes do not receive a freshness date. Significant factual, product, link, evidence, or recommendation reviews may receive a “Last reviewed” timestamp. Material corrections are explained on the affected page. Read our Corrections Policy or report an error.
Editorial independence
